You Can’t Sit With Us: GMOs
This blog post is one in a four-part series on our ingredient philosophy. We’ve made a conscious choice not to include some ingredients in Redd bars, and while it may seem silly to talk about something that isn’t there, our lack of harmful ingredients is an important part of our commitment to you. Stay tuned for the rest of the series, and let us know what you think by using the hashtag #allkillernofiller.
This week’s post revolves around a particularly hot topic in the food world right now: GMOs, or genetically modified organisms. This scientific practice (involving inserting genetic material from one species into another) has been controversial for many years. Much scientific research has been devoted to studying the effects of GMOs on human health and the environment, and the conclusions have been mixed.
Before anyone starts getting all Internet-mad, we should say that we aren’t scientists. We’re just concerned consumers, and that’s why we built a food brand around intentional, powerful ingredients. We know, just like you do, that what we put in our bodies matters. Taking risks can be fun (text your crush! Start your side hustle!) But risks don’t belong in our food.
Most likely, you know many of the facts around GMOs. They’re hugely prevalent in our food system, and their effects on the human body are TBD. Oh, and they might drive monarch butterflies extinct. These might not seem like big deals, but consider that very few long-term studies have been done on GMO consumption. If GMOs have adverse effects on our bodies or our planet, we may not know yet.
Innocent until proven guilty is a great premise on Law & Order, but it’s not how we treat our bodies. Why not err on the safe side (and respect the butterflies) by staying GMO-free? Leaving potentially hazardous ingredients out of Redd bars allows us more room for great natural replacements. With bars made up of plant-based protein, nuts, seeds, fruit, and dark chocolate, who needs GMOs?
Life has a lot of unknowns. That’s why we keep them out of our ingredients list. We’ve curated Redd to include everything that you need and absolutely nothing that you don’t. Grab a bar, and you can feel just as good about what isn’t there as what is.
